Hike, bike or picnic with the family. There’s something for everyone – seven days a week – at Wolfe Park. If it’s swimming your family is looking for, there’s two spots that fill the bill. Come in the morning and enjoy out 25 meter, 6 lane pool complete with a separate kiddie pool. In the afternoon, walk on over to Great Hollow Lake and sun yourself on its 700-foot sandy beach. If you’ve got kids…you’re in luck. It’s got the best castle-building sand around. Or…take a break from the sun and cool yourself with a shady trail walk around the lake. If you’re looking for somewhere different to eat at lunchtime, try a trailside stop at any number of picnic tables and fire up one of the barbeques there. If you’ve got kids…you’re in luck. The lake is stocked with trout every spring. Let ‘em bring a pole so you can teach them how to land one. Or…bring your bike for the 4.1 mile Rails-to-Trails bike path…tennis racket for hours of match play on any one of our eight tennis courts…or basketball to shot hoops on our two courts. And, of course, if you’ve got kids…you’re in luck! Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department has sports and recreation programs for every age. For more information on park activities and programs, call the Parks and Recreation Department or consult our website at monroerec.org. And There’s More… For added aquatic enjoyment…there’s the pool at Masuk High School. The kids can splash around, learn to swim, or you can swim yourself. Used year round and home of the Shelton/Monroe Rapids Swim Team, you’ll find up-to-date changing facilities and plenty of room to watch your kids learn their strokes. We have a boat ramp at the biggest one around. Lake Zoar is a large reservoir formed by the construction of Stevenson Dam. To get a bird’s eye view of the lake, hike the Paugussett Trail for about a mile north of Webb Mountain Park in Monroe. Zoar Beach Boat Ramp – Monroe; This ramp is a good access point to the lake. The gorge downstream of the dam is very scenic although is it hazardous for a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the dam because there is no sidewalk or bike lane. Directions: Route 34 in Monroe just before the Stevenson Dam (the western bank of the drive), marked parking is on both the north and south sides of the road.
